10/08/2002 Entry: "Stop Requested."

This morning on the train, as often happens, we sat just outside the station not quite all the way in, and definitely not at the east end of the platform where the computer (or train operator) opens the doors. And like they always do, somebody kicked the "open the door" bar hard, as if their kung fu was going to open the doors right here, with half the train still in the darkened tunnel. Sure, when the trains are out in the streets you have to press the bar to open the doors. And you usually have to pull the cord to tell the driver to stop. But have these people never ridden the trains into the subway before? Have they never had a train stop in the tunnels because of traffic? Don't they realize that the train is going to stop at each station down here whether they ring the bell or not?

Of course, as I thought this, the train lurched ahead and sped out of the station without stopping.
