A New Year In The Gutters.

I was walking down Second street in the rain, head down, holding my umbrella up to shield me from the sky, passing strangers in black coats. Suddenly, as I passed in front of the bank, the smell of Christmas tree hit me full force. It smelled clean and happy, and brightened my mood a little. Strange, I thought, especially since the bank had long since removed its holiday decorations. Is this that long lost Christmas spirit I was missing in my last post?

I stood in the long, wet and grumbling line for my monthly Fast Pass, got greasy Chinese take-out and started walking back in the same trudging rain when the smell came to me again. This time I glanced over to the street and noticed a needled branch sticking out from another pedestrian's shiny black jacket. I looked closer and noticed tinsel, and the rest of an enormous discarded christmas tree bedecked in a black plastic bag for a hood, protecting itself from the rain.

I don't know how I missed it the first time. But so goes 2005, out like yesterday's garbage. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Now I'll just try not to let 2006 hit us on the way in. (Feel better soon Jeff!)
