Hipster PDA Crash.

I've been in denial about it for a couple of weeks now, but I have to face facts: I lost my Hipster PDA (link via George.) Mine was a small red notebook, actually, not as flexible as the 43 Folders version but still tremendously useful. Phone numbers and addresses, dimensions of rooms and furniture for housewares shopping, part numbers, half-scribbled half-sentences that were going to be Web posts, that sort of thing—now all lost. If you're wondering why I haven't called you in a while...well, that may be part of the problem.

My gosh, did I ever feel superior when I heard someone complain that they lost all their phone numbers again when their electronic handheld or cellphone failed or disappeared. Why not write it down, I'd think? That way you would never lose it.

Since I don't believe in an afterlife, when Karma does its best work, it's indistinguishable from irony.

In my search for that notebook, though, I found an old one I used in 2000, before I switched to an electronic PDA. It's neat having a permanent record of the minutiae of the times...well, permanent as long as you don't lose it. Regardless, things have changed less than I'd imagined since then, at least by looking at old shopping and to-do lists, like this one:

diary entry
Clean Bathroom
Install OS 9
Visit Mom
"Kidzilla"
Aaron's TV Frame
Bread
World Domination

Hmmm...maybe I should put "World Domination" back on my to-do list. As soon as I find my to-do list, anyway.
